Cabinets are one of the most seen and used items in your house.  I think they really set the tone of the room they are in.  Cabinets are an endless list of choices.  The color is the first thing we think of, which is a big decision.  The color in the kitchen is especially important these days because of the popular wide open spaces of the kitchen and family room areas.  So that was something I really considered.  I love the look of deep brown wood cabinets, but I wanted the beams to just jump out at you when you looked across the area. So I decided on white cabinets with a chocolate antiquing glaze.  Then I had to decide if I am brave enough to go with different color for the island. Well that became a harder choice.  I loved the way all the kitchens on Pinterest looked with a different color, but I didn’t know if I could actually figure out how to pull that off.  Well I did go with a different color, yellow of course!  The jury is still out if I pulled it off or not.  The cabinets are in their places in the kitchen for the most part, but without the doors, the flooring and the top it is still hard to say.  Time will tell!

But since I got so brave on that I decided to do the same thing in the master bathroom.  I’m not sure it’s legal in the decorating world but I made Gary’s vanity a beautiful deep brown and my vanity the yellow of the kitchen island!  I know……call me crazy!  The jury is still out there too!  I almost ditched my whole vanity AFTER it was all built.  It isn’t together yet because the flooring has to go in first, but when I saw all the pieces I thought I had made a major and costly mistake!  The challenge was that my little cubby space for my sink and vanity was small in width, but deep.  The vanity actually is built away from the wall about 24 inches because the whole wall is covered by the cabinets that sit on top of the counter.  So you can’t actually see the depth of the wall.  This was so hard for me to visualize that my cabinet maker had to come out and partially piece the vanity together so I would be comfortable with it.  Once we did that I am cautiously on board.  I hope it turns out as beautiful as I think it might!  Can’t wait to show you that one when it gets done!

Back to some thoughts on cabinet decisions.  When you have custom cabinets you get to decide the configuration of them all!  That means you need to think of how you use your cabinet space.  Do you need room for platters? Do you have a large array of plates and glasses?  Do you want your microwave in a cabinet?  Do you need an extra large cabinet for big spaghetti pots?  Do you like a spice rack next to the cooktop?  Do you like drawers or pull outs?  How about a lazy susan in the corner cabinet? Oh by the way……how do want the drawers to shut?  Softly or slam your finger fast?  Wow!  I think there were more but I blocked them out when I went into overload mode.

Call me crazy…..I don’t have the same cabinets throughout the house!  Every bathroom vanity in the house is different.  That was a drag my feet decision too!  The powder room was like a treasure hunt.  I wanted a white washed Mexican dresser.  I finally found one in an actual bathroom at an antique store.  I took a picture of it and had it custom made through a Mexican furniture store.  It turned out beautifully!  Then the guest bathroom I ordered a vanity online through Signature Hardware.  It is a little redder in color than I had hoped for but I think it will be fine.  The grandkids bathroom was a real challenge because it is a 60 inch vanity.  Online retailers have 36 inch vanities from here to eternity, but the 60 inchers are so much harder to find.  In fact I never did find one.  So I went back to my custom cabinet maker and he is making the most fun bathroom vanity I could ever imagine!  It will carry the personality of the grandkids room.  It is still in the works so I can’t wait to share it with you when it is done!

Well there are still finished cabinet pictures in our future!  For now enjoy the puzzle of cabinets that are in the farmhouse waiting for completion!
