Windows! Windows! Windows!  I just love windows! I believe I have 46 windows all together in the farmhouse.  The architect loved windows also, so I even have a window in the laundry room.  Actually many of my big windows have their own little windows above them.  My toilet room in the master bathroom has its own window.  Don’t worry, it’s up high. The bathtub has a window too! You don’t have to worry on that one either, it’s obscure glass.  Natural light will be everywhere!  And the covered porches will help cut down the heat that comes with very large windows.

The two dormers on the roof of the house are real windows that will bring in natural light through the vaulted ceilings.  The bay of french doors will feel like a wall of windows.  There will also be a picture window in the kitchen that is 4 foot high and 10 feet wide!  It is special glass because of the size and need to be shattered resistant.

The windows are a tricky proposition though.  It is the place in both houses where I have had to make some unforseen changes.  The three small windows on the east side of the master bedroom were too low by about 24 inches.  I needed them to be high enough that I didn’t need to cover them for privacy and they would let in the brief morning light.  I do love that light shining through when I wake up.  The windows above the bank of french doors to the porch got overlooked and had to be placed in once the wall was up.  The window in my vanity area was too high.  I am short so I couldn’t see out of it.  So it had to be moved down.  You do need to take into consideration how tall you are when you do many features in a custom home!  The big windows at the front of the house are all low so that even the toddlers around the house can see out!

They say that your eyes are the window to your soul.  I find that to be true in many instances with people.  I am captivated by people’s eyes.  I have always loved the National Geographic pictures of the Afghan girl with the striking green eyes. I have a coffee table book full of people’s faces.  Sometimes my heart breaks when I see the sadness is someone’s eyes or I am filled with joy when it seems as though a sparkle has appeared in someone’s eyes as they laugh.  Maybe that’s why I like windows.  I like to see in, but I also like to look out.  I hope this farmhouse will engage people from the inside and the outside of their soul!
