When you think of a neutral color, you think of tan, black, white, brown, cream, and
nude yes? Well I think of all those too, but I also think turquoise. The stone of course!  I
also think about cheetah print, but that’s a whole different subject, we won’t start on that. I
wear at least one turquoise piece probably five days out of the week. So like I said, for me
it is very much a neutral, from jeans and a t-shirt to my dolled up best. For me turquoise
works with all. Although the Squash Blossom is in a league of it’s own, and possibly
deserves it’s own blog, talking about turquoise and not touching on this iconic item
would just not make sense.

There are so many different types of squash blossoms we probably would need a few
days and some long road trips to jewelry shops across the southwest to cover them all.
But the best squash blossoms I think can only be stumbled upon like a rare gem, and
when you find the perfect one you’ll know it was meant for you. Aside from the squash
blossom, your turquoise possibilities are endless, cuffs, necklaces, and one of my favorites
rings. I feel that turquoise is without a doubt a jewelry box staple and lasts for a lifetime.
Behind many turquoise pieces are many stories, and everyone loves a good story.  I
know that each of my pieces mean something different to me. So it’s not just the gorgeous
stone that compliments your outfit perfectly, with turquoise it’s the story, the people who
wore it before you, who gave it to you, or maybe where you found it.

A turquoise given by a loving hand carries with it happiness and good fortune.”
Arabic proverb.

Around the 1950’s my Great Grandfather gave my Grandmother a squash
blossom. Nani Gloria was my mom’s mom.  I never knew her as a physical person, she
passed away before I was born. But I’ve known her my whole life as more of an angel
figure that is there even though you may not be able to see her. I’ve heard so many stories
about her and her love for clothes, sewing, and just being  glamorous in general. In
my head she is really quite fabulous. I hope that my style, my need to always be dressed
up, and my love of fashion may be something she taught me by just watching over me.  It’s through a family heirloom that somehow turned into a very “Sierra” item (as my family would say) sixty something years later that I know Nani Gloria. I feel like we know each other well, even though we’ve never talked or seen each other face to face.

So go ahead and wear turquoise! It really is a neutral!
