I am so excited to introduce my first guest for my Hispanic Heritage Profile, Sierra Rae Lewis. Some of you may already know that Sierra is my niece. Sierra is a 26 years old graduate of West Texas A&M University. She majored in Agricultural Media and Communication. She currently is a Rodeo Fashion Influencer. She is one busy girl with not only that, but also manages multiple western industry media and marketing accounts.

I asked Sierra how her Mexican heritage has influenced who she is today. “I think it has heavily affected who I am because of my mother’s family’s influence. Growing up I went to a predominantly Hispanic Catholic Elementary School in Arizona. This made me much more aware of Hispanic culture on a daily basis.”

Sierra never met her Grandmother who’s first language was Spanish, unfortunately her mother and other relatives were not fluent in Spanish. Which has left her wanting to learn more about the language and culture that she came from. She wishes that in her grandmother’s era it was more acceptable to speak Spanish and have a mastery of more than one language. Sierra said, “I feel like I lost out on some of my culture because my grandmother was never encouraged to really be who she was as a Hispanic woman in her day.”

As an elementary school student Sierra loved the look of the Ballet Folklorico dancers. Her school had specialty classes on Wednesdays and she chose the Ballet Folklorico. “I loved the dresses, the traditional hair styles and adornment and of course, the makeup!”

To celebrate her 21st birthday Sierra chose a Mexican Fiesta themed party at my Farmhouse. She wore a traditional embroidered dress and a flower crown. The party was full of bright colored decorations and all the delicious Mexican food including churros! It was a night to remember!

Sierra is such a great example of a millennial who has embraced her Hispanic roots. She has immersed herself in traditions such as the Ballet Folklorico. She would choose to eat Mexican food everyday if she could. Sierra’s social media accounts are influenced by her clothing choices that she features on a regular basis.

I am are so thankful for Sierra spending some time with me chatting about Hispanic Heritage Month and what it means to her. Thank you Sierra. Check her out on Instagram sierra_raegram to see all her content!
