Oh how we all love shiplap these days!! And I am no exception! I love how it is rustic, but with a fresh coat of crisp white paint it dresses it up just enough to be warm and welcoming! I knew I wanted to put shiplap in the house, I just didn’t exactly know where and how we would do this. So when my builder went to the lumber company to get shiplap samples they give him a half inch thick plank by either 2,4 or 6 inches wide. Not only is that super expensive (it becomes the equivalent of building a wall over a wall) but it was going to be very busy with so many planks on four 15 foot walls! So we did a little more research and found that 1/4 inch plywood works beautifully. It can also be ripped to the desired width for your project. We went with 12 inches wide. This made for a very nice look that wasn’t to busy with the horizontal lines. We used a nickel spacing between the planks.
The four main walls that we covered were the two main walls in the living room and the family room kitchen area that are the north to south walls. Our plank flooring also runs north to south. This is a large floor space so it makes the space even appear larger with the lines running the same way. Think “do these stripes make me look fat?” Those shiplap walls give the appearance that the “bones” of the big farmhouse were shiplap from years ago and we remodeled around them. I love the feel of the house being lived in for years already!
I decided to go with a strip of shiplap between the two windows on the north wall of the master bedroom. This was a much smaller space so we went with a smaller 6 inch width on the plywood. Our king sized bed will go against this wall. I think the white shiplap is going to be a beautiful backdrop for our big dark wood bed frame! Then on the south wall of the bedroom we put shiplap to chair rail height. This is where I will put some sort of seating area.
The cutest little space ever is the small north wall of the powder room. Here we put planks of all different widths and lengths. It looks like it was made from the leftover wood on the south 40 years ago! I can’t wait for you all to see the powder room. It is going to be all white with lots of colored accessories with a Mexican flavor!!
Shiplap has been such a fun addition to the house! I have never actually seen a home with shiplap on the walls so it has been a bit of an experiment. But I think I’m going to love sitting at the dinner table and looking a the beautiful white shiplap walls!
