I am a brown girl. There. I’ve said it. I am a brown girl. I know it is controversial to admit and I have waited a long time before admitting the truth. I am a brown girl. I’m sorry to hurt anyone’s feelings and I hope it doesn’t cut to deep but, I DO NOT LOVE GREY. I LOVE BROWN. I AM A BROWN GIRL.

It has taken me several years into my journey of discovery into which colors I like in the Farmhouse best. When I built the Farmhouse four years ago the whole world loved Chip and Joanna, including me. We all wanted to be as creative and beautiful as Jo and wanted our husbands to be as fun loving and talented as Chip. We wanted our home makeovers to look as beautiful as every Fixer Upper House looked when they did the big reveal.

So as I navigated the color schemes for the Farmhouse I automatically went with grey and white. The good news is that white has always been a go to color in cabinets for me from way back. So my white cabinets in the Farmhouse were an easy pick. Now the yellow island gave me fits. I just wasn’t seeing that in the trends. They were always grey. But I bit the bullet and painted the island a creamy yellow. At that moment I thought it was a riskier move than frosting a three tiered wedding cake with your toddler twins on the counter. Looking back it doesn’t seem risky at all! But those yellow walls in the kitchen were never safe and I love them more than ever. Now the yellow guest bedroom with it’s grey comforters……….not so much. The poor guest bedroom still hasn’t found it’s vibe yet. But I can tell you, it’s not yellow and grey.

The little grey guest bathroom with the faded out white and grey tile still has all my love. I do like grey. I just don’t like it large amounts. And the little grey guest bathroom is just perfect!

My taupe walls in my bedroom are just brown(ish) enough to make me happy. The grey comforter and grey flower chairs…….they are going to have to be re-homed. I just threw a fresh floral, cream, brown, tan, soft pink and yellow Pottery Barn quilt on top of the king and it warmed my heart. It just feels better as I settle in after a long day!

The different shades of brown just make me feel cozy! You can only imagine why fall is one of my favorite decorating times of year. I live in the desert southwest where we don’t have any leaves that turn brilliant shades of fall colors, but those sure are my comfort colors. Think serape…..which is the pattern of curtains in my office. Think rust. That color is an old favorite and now has a huge following as a trending color this year. My mom had rust carpet in her house in 1976. But think about it, brown in any shade is my go to color. I have brown eyes, brown skin and brown hair (actually it Loreal G5 medium golden brown). I have three kids with brown hair and brown eyes. I do love all of them. I love the color of caramel on an apple or in a square. I love the color of coffee with creamer mixed through it. I wear brown Maui Jims. I love the amber of a tall, cool glass of ice tea. I drive a brown SUV with a brown interior. Hot chocolate on a chilly night. Big, brown wood beams in your house. And who doesn’t love a brownie!

That is why I have come to terms with my love of colors. I AM A BROWN GIRL. But I don’t want you thinking that all those fun bright colors don’t have a place in my life. Think serape! I don’t want to be boring brown but I don’t think I’m fun loving bright all the time either. Just maybe I strive to be sturdy, calm brown as my foundation and have pops of fun loving color in my life on a regular basis! Maybe that’s who I really want to be. I want to have a foundation in my life that is strong and sturdy and have a life that is enriched by colorful relationships and experiences.

What color are you? What color do you want your life to be? Jump in with both feet and find out! Then, I hope you can live a life that is as sturdy as a big wood beam and as colorful as a serape dancing in the wind.

Happy almost most fall! Thanks for stopping by and spending a moment!

Blessings,

Carrie
