Well I decided I would take one for the team this upcoming holiday season and try out the new box flavors for desserts coming out! Often times I feel that I would like them and then don’t buy them, opting for the safe cake mix (or fill in the blank for you) that I know and love. So I will be trying different brands and mixes this season and see what we come up with!
The first one I tried was Pillsbury Caramel Apple Premium Cake Mix. I got adventurous and actually went to the alternative recipe on the back for Salted Caramel Apple Crisp Bars. I followed the recipe with one exception. It called for 1/2 cup of butter. The mixture was just to dry for my liking. It wouldn’t crumble or mix the dry ingredients with the wet. So I love butter and went with adding another 1/2 cup. This helped the moisture content of the mix. I diced up the apples in the middle which made for a nice texture. My 3 year old grandson kept calling it Apple Tree Cake!
The Pillsbury mix has a companion frosting can called Creamy Supreme Caramel Apple. I used it to drizzle over the top of the bars. The family all liked this recipe very well. It was a good mixture with the oats and fresh apples. The overall taste was very much like eating a caramel apple. We really like it and would definitely make it again!
