Thanksgiving at my house was one part chaos, one part delicious food and full on THANKFUL! We certainly enjoyed our meal. As usual there was lots of it. I went wild making all kinds of desserts this year! That is my favorite part of Thanksgiving……well, I really love mashed potatoes too! We had all our “traditional” food. Turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes, gravy, green bean casserole, sweet potatoes, rolls, cranberry sauce, corn casserole and orange jello salad. So, the food was delicious, but it wasn’t the best part.

The best part were the people at the Thanksgiving Table. We had 2 out of the 3 kids and their families here. So we always miss whichever kid and their family isn’t here with us. But we gained some others. A young adult friend from another state and her boyfriend, my husband’s parents, a friend of my daughter’s and we had 5 of our farm employees join us! What a special group it was. Talk about eclectic. We had several people with Master’s Degrees at the table, several people who are educators, several people who have traveled the world, several people who don’t speak English, people who are single and people who are married, people who have just lost a loved one, people who like to dance, people who like to talk about finances, people who have children and people who don’t, people who like turkey and people who don’t!
When we sit down with people and enter into a meal it is the great equalizer. We are sitting at a common table sharing a meal. It brings us closer to Christ in our ability to share such a meaningful act with people who are not just like us. People we know and some we don’t, yet we now have a commonality. We laughed and ate and shared our life stories. We shared the human experience of sharing a meal. That is one of our most basic of needs. Eating a meal together, not just at Thanksgiving, gives us the opportunity to know our family better, as well as anyone we invite to the table. So I encourage you to invite someone to the table and share your stories. You will come away a richer person for it.
One of the really fun things this Thanksgiving about our table was it’s significance. One of the tables we ate on was made by son-in-law. He made it for me just in time for the big meal! I know it was made with love and it is just what I wanted! I missed having my Dad here with us so much! The holidays are hard for those of us who have lost someone we love. Before his passing he gave me my mother’s dishes that we used for Thanksgiving and special occasions at my home growing up. I also had the crystal glasses that Gary and I received as wedding gifts 38 years ago. As my daughter-in-law said “you have three generations at this table” and I know that it is “three generations of love” at this table. What a special table that turned out to be!

So Thankful for Thanksgiving! Now we are entering into the Christmas season. I am going to strive to make Christ the most important part of it! I hope you will to. Maybe we can come up with some encouraging ways to do that! So starting thinking and share with us on our social media pages!
Blessings,
Carrie
